  And I just saw that you're a Darren Hanlon fan - I absolutely love the lyrics to his song 'Hiccups'. Saw him live a couple of years ago and he made me grin.
  
  I'm only really a Tom Morgan fan when his lyrics are being sung by Evan Dando - I love his lyrics, but I'm not overly fond of his voice! Meanwhile Evan is probably my favourite singer, but I don't think he's that great a songwriter when he works alone.
  
  I've only got one Smudge album though, "Mo Poontang". Perhaps that's not the best example of his work? I don't know 
  
  Basically he's on my list purely because The Outdoor Type is one of the best lyrics ever written, ever.

  Max, it wasn't intentional on Third Rail and I never would have noticed unless you pointed it out but it is an ironic placement of the beeping sound for sure. I sometimes catch computer noises when I am recording and that is what happened, I think. Thanks for coming by to listen.

  Well done, you beat me with one more song!  To be honest, after number 14 I forgot about the number and I was even more in it for the fun than before. I didn't realize I had 35 songs before I had uploaded the last song! I had only 30 minutes or so a day and believe me, they made my day every time! I had a heavy month emotionally and physically, but once behind my piano, I got into a state of "flow" and 'became' the song I played. I'm sure you know the feeling!

  You asked if I perform my music live...I don't. I'm in a band, we do little gigs but only cover songs. The group members are cool but they're much older and not looking to create songs from scratch. I don't think I'd want to either, I quite like working alone < bit of a loner. So, maybe I could start playing my own tunes but the venue would always have to have a clapped out old clanger for a piano...

  Hoi Max, ik weet niet of we elkaar hebben ontmoet, maar ik ken idd Channah, paar keer samen wat dingen georganiseerd en speelde afgelopen donderdag (met een toch behoorlijk ziek hoofd) in fusion u.p., bij het open podium. Het begon weinig hoopgevend maar eindigde met wel een enthousiast lawaai. Ik probeer nl. ook weer elke week wat te spelen. Er was een vriendin van Channah bezig met FAWM die ik sprak, een van de fusion co-organisators, maar ben haar naam kwijt, kort donker haar. I used an old toy guitar on my first song. The Uke (fuc) thread http://fawm.org/forums/thread/202/ made me to take two strings off to see if it could produce a Uke sound. Close enough I hope.

  I like how this works for Fawm, but can be applied to returning to anything. Universal is something that's good in a song, I think. And on a production note, love the fade out bgvs at the end.

  ok you had me fooled. I thought for sure it was a uke you were playing. Love the contrast of the toy guitar/uke sound with the punk-esque nature of the song. Obviously a song about being back to FAWM but it could certainly be about going to any place that has fond memory. Well done! Really, well done. I second what Louis Gray says about the production. Really cool fades back and forth on the vocals and love the choice (assuming it's a choice) to go with a lo-fi, retro sound. [clap,clap, clap, clap,clap, clap]

I used an old toy guitar on my first song. The Uke (fuc) thread http://fawm.org/forums/thread/202/ made me to take two strings off to see if it could produce a Uke sound. Close enough I hope.

Last week February 1st the home of the Amsterdam Songwriters Guild closed its doors.
It has the been the venue where we had our Tuesday Open Mic nights and gigs for many years.
Café Sappho in Amsterdam was the place where I learned to perform my own songs live, met some nice people, made friends, heard beautiful songs from other people, talked about music all night long, etc. Ahhh good memories.
All good things end someday. We found a new place, but this venue was my home from home.

What I have learned from FAWM is to make songs universal. To write about personal things in a way other people can relate.
I hope I can play this song in the new venue someday, but right now it's about the good times I had at Café Sappho.

  I love the second guitar-ish guitar that comes in soon after the beginning, it's very "plucky" and percussion-like. The "yeahs" reminds me a bit of John Wozniak of Marcy Playground fame, which is really awesome. Then when I listen to it again, you sound nothing like that. Very unique and enjoyable; this deserves several listens in my opinion, as it hides many layers.

  super-spandex spunky! it's great in all ways. since you asked, there is one improperly placed word-- in the first stanza, in the line "if you let me to, i will rescue you," there should not be a 'to' there. unnecessary and can be a teeny bit confusing. now i want to write a song called "Causal Hero," so watch out-- you might have a crucio situation coming up here.

  Great cover, Max! Your voice fits well to these lyrics. Kinda reminds me of Johnny Cash in a way, has the same feel to it as his song "Hurt." (I know it wasn't meant to be "country," but of course, since JC is one of the legends in which rock started, it can still have that feel...lol). I absolutely love it!!   Wonderful, humor and musicianship combine to make a fantastic opus. What comes across is a lighthearted poet with a heart of gold. Great backing vocals, and the delicate descending piano lines are great, especially considering you are singing such ridiculous lyrics like "honey brown yellow stuff." I didn't expect the vocal ad-libs at the end, nice bonus.

  What a great twist to the lullabye form ... the loopy brain-death energy and worries of the insomniac in an infinite loop trying to coax sleep ... or if he has dropped off, this is his loopy dream of trying to fall asleep. The full, slow limited sonic pallette is sleep-inducing in a cool way ... creating a reverie that extends beyond the time the song is playing. I am sitting here thinking and just realized it had stopped several minutes ago. Your videos are so helpful to getting a feeling for the song's tone without being distracted by a real person playing or cavorting. They really have me thinking about alternative ways to use video to highlight the songs. Thanks!

  Ooooh fun! I like dancing! So from all your songs I chose this! And then it had a great groove from the beginning! :D Dance all night! Huzzah! I don't blame you! That would be fun to dance all night! I can really only last for about 3 or so hours. And then I get really tired. And sweaty. And gross. Anyway have now listened to this song about 4 times, and it's really cool. Now, why have I listened to this song 4 times? Because I was trying to find a fun dance video for it, that's why! Now, I KNOW you have a dance video for it, so don't take it personally that I was looking for other videos. But... the truth is...   Love it! For a number of years I played uke on my guitar while I changed strings... leave off the A and low E for awhile while I plucked around capo 5. Of course the ukulele really has that 4th string an octave higher (like the effect on the banjo of the fifth string), which gives it such a distinctive sweet strum. Totally like the toy guitar fuzzy buzz. Simple yet fresh!

  I'm right there with Plush on the oohs and ahhs, though the song is pretty darned close to perfect as is. I like the tantalizingly brief flirtation with a major key in the chorus. Makes me even madder at the subject when we go back to minor - like when the prerecorded voice comes in to remind me that my call is important.

Q: Do you need to write songs to stay sane?

A: I guess so. Writing songs is great therapy and a great way to canalize your feelings and thoughts.
It’s also a way to explore your own brain, to expand your horizon and learning to be open for new ideas.
That is when you’re fully aware of what you’re doing.
However sometimes the lyrics you’re writing take you to places/situations/feelings you don’t want to go, still you have to deal with it, cause you’re the one writing it. That can drive me insane sometimes.

Q: If you decided that you didn't need to write songs anymore, what would you write instead?
Does it really matter as long as you're writing?

A: Graffiti
I can ‘write’ with colors, images, video, music, etc. I prefer writing my tunes though.

  I like how the percussion changes after "...on a silver plate." It'd be interesting to hear how it would sound with MORE percussion during that section rather than less...kinda like a "breakdown." A terrific last song for FAWM this year, with a feel-good rhythm and positive lyrics. Great job!

  Last song of fawm Max! Good work on getting he last one in. I would like to hear a bit more of the song bfore the vocal comes in. This is very reminiscent of kinky afro and i thought that before I read what you had said...only the verse though the chorus is very much max! Loving the sentiment and maybe if it was recorded in a different style Shaun Ryder won't pop over to visit you! Congrats on another fine fawm Max!

  This is really wonderful, and heartfelt, honest and real..while being a great pop song at the same time. Love those backup vocals near the end, would love to hear them louder and more of them starting around 2/3 of the way thru.. great great job! How old is your oldest son? does he play music at all? and I don't know the happy mondays so i can't comment on any similarities, but this really sounds wonderful!

  Super! This has a really engaging groove, and I like the message / story behind it. How old is your son? This would make an awesome birthday present. For my 21st my parents gave me a framed poem on a similar theme written by my grandfather when I was 3 months old (I didn't know the poem even existed until that day) and I really treasure it.

  19 songs! My goodness, excellent work. I'm about to go listen... You asked if I perform my music live...I don't. I'm in a band, we do little gigs but only cover songs. The group members are cool but they're much older and not looking to create songs from scratch. I don't think I'd want to either, I quite like working alone < bit of a loner. I didn't realize I had 35 songs before I had uploaded the last song! I had only 30 minutes or so a day and believe me, they made my day every time!   And I just saw that you're a Darren Hanlon fan - I absolutely love the lyrics to his song 'Hiccups'. Saw him live a couple of years ago and he made me grin. I'm only really a Tom Morgan fan when his lyrics are being sung by Evan Dando - I love his lyrics, but I'm not overly fond of his voice! Meanwhile Evan is probably my favourite singer, but I don't think he's that great a songwriter when he works alone. I've only got one Smudge album though, "Mo Poontang". Perhaps that's not the best example of his work? I don't know :) Basically he's on my list purely because The Outdoor Type is one of the best lyrics ever written, ever.
